In Spain

I have always tended to dismiss Mallorca as a destination purely for package tours, but a cheap flight and the prospect of swimming in warm water changed my mind.

Yes Mallorca has a huge number of tourists and yes there are towns completely over run by British and Germans. However, the island also has an amazing history and is very beautiful with plenty of smaller places not overwhelmed by European holiday makers. That said, Mallorca is going to be much more enjoyable away from the peak of the summer tourist season. And it is not so expensive either.

Palma del Majorca, the island's capital is a stunning old city with a 13th century Gothic Cathedral, shady courtyards, narrow medieval streets and cafes on every corner.
